When you’re moving to a different St Mungo’s property this is known as an ‘internal move’, because you move from one St Mungo’s accommodation service to another. This means that you still have some staff support and protections. Some examples of internal moves could be: moving to a lower support or a higher support.
Different St Mungo’s accommodation services and pathways have different options depending on the Borough.
In some services, people can stay for up to 6 months while being connected to relevant support services (e.g., GP, mental health services, substance use support, criminal justice support, employment training and education) and find suitable longer-term move-on options (e.g., supported accommodation, semi-independent, private rented, detox/rehab). Residents are allocated a key worker who supports them to access these services and works with them to identify their individual goals and put steps in place to work towards their aspirations.
You may not be aware but there are different types of support services provided by St Mungo’s and other charities. Once you’re in one service you may move to different ones after 6-12 months or a few years. This should always be to support you or to fit your needs. It’s important for you and your lead worker to talk about your independent living skills and any conditions that affect your day to day living.

Before you move to a different service, there may be some things they have to consider for you: Are you paying your service charge? Have your support needs changed? Has your physical or mental health improved? Could the move affect you in a negative way? Even though you may have strong relationships in your current service, there may be better support out there for you. After successfully making a referral to a step down or step up accommodation, you will be informed by your lead worker what's the next steps.
When new accommodation has been identified for you, it’s always a good idea to visit and meet the staff there. Even though new moves can be scary, remember what it was like when you first came to St Mungo’s. You can adapt and get comfortable in a new environment, it can just take some time. Just remember that you should get the support you need and deserve. If there are any concerns on your mind please don’t hesitate to speak to a staff member.
